In a blow for Socceroos fans, midfield star Aaron Mooy has been ruled out of the 'Welcome Home' series in Australia due to a lingering back injury.

The 32-year-old Celtic star has been brilliant under fellow Aussie Ange Postecoglou for the Bhoys, but missed their 3-1 win over Hibernian on the weekend to deal with the soreness.

After consultation with Socceroos medical staff, it was decided Mooy should remain in Scotland, skipping the friendlies against Ecuador at Sydney's CommBank Stadium on March 24 and Melbourne's Marvel Stadium on March 28.

The friendlies are Australia's first matches after their successful Qatar World Cup, when the Socceroos won two matches and reached the knockout stage for the second time, with Mooy playing a key role.

They've been billeted as a 'Welcome Home' for the squad that stopped the nation, with chaotic viewing parties around the country.
