Wayne Bennett has revealed what happened when he shocked the footy world by sacking Kevin Walters as his assistant at the Broncos in 2005 - insisting he did it for the former five-eighth's own good.

Walters, one of the club's greatest players, starred under Bennett in Brisbane's glory era from 1990-2000 and was quick to move into coaching upon retirement.

But the current Broncos mentor found himself turfed out of the club by Bennett, who put a broom through the coaching room after the club failed the make a grand final for five straight seasons leading up to 2005, despite winning five premierships since 1992.

The fiery half was fuming at the time, saying he was sacked because 'clearly I'm not a yes man'.

But Bennett has since revealed he let go of Walters to help him become a better coach.
