Donald McCain’s Minella Trump is on course to run in next month’s Randox Grand National after emerging unscathed from his first run in almost 300 days at Bangor on Saturday.

His presence in the Aintree line-up on April 15 will be appropriate given it is 50 years since the great Red Rum, trained by McCain’s father Ginger, won the first of his record three Grand Nationals.

But despite Minella Trump taking his chance, there remain fears that the British representation in the 40-runner field for the iconic race will remarkably be in single figures with the Irish potentially having more than 30 runners.

Minella Trump was well beaten in the two-and-a-half-mile hurdle won by stablemate Jungle Jack on his first run since he won the Perth Gold Cup in June last year.

McCain, who won the 2011 Grand National with Ballabriggs, said: ‘We needed to get a blow into Minella Trump and a two-and-a-half-mile handicap hurdle wouldn’t play to his strengths plus it was a
