The recognised Derby trial appeared to be at the behest of Aidan O’Brien, who saddled hot favourite Alexandroupolis alongside stablemates Denmark and Mohawk Chief, but victory went to the 22-1 outsider ridden by Shane Foley for trainer John Joseph Murphy. Foley said: ‘It wasn’t necessarily a surprise. I’ve ridden him in his work over the last couple of weeks and I’ve really liked him. They went a proper gallop and it never let up. I knew around the bottom bend that I was getting to them and he picked up better than I expected.’ Trainer O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore teamed up to win both Guineas trials with Hans Andersen and Never Ending Story.
