Sam Allardyce believes Eddie Howe and Newcastle have got their transfer policy spot on as they close in on a Champions League place.

Allardyce is in temporary charge of Leeds ahead of their huge clash with his former club at Elland Road on Saturday.

The 68-year-old had a spell as boss of Newcastle in 2007-08, but believes current manager Howe has benefited from some smart recruitment since a huge cash injection from their Saudi Arabian owners.

Asked if it was Howe’s prowess or Newcastle’s money that had taken the club to third in the Premier League, Allardyce said: ‘All of it. if it doesn’t all come together it doesn’t work.
