Rob Hale, co-owner of the Boston Celtics, showed up at the graduation ceremony of 2,500 students at UMass Boston to surprise them with $1,000 each, moments before they crossed the stage.
Hale, who holds a $5billion net worth, spoke at the university's 55th commencement ceremony on Thursday before giving out the cash, which he split into two envelopes so students can keep $500 and donate the other half.
'These are turbulent times. You guys have survived. You have prospered. You are to be celebrated,' said the 55-year-old, who's also the cofounder, president and CEO of Granite Telecommunications.
'We want to give you two gifts. The first is a gift to you. The second is the gift of giving.'
Hale also touched base on the benefits of rising up from failure and paying it forward through philanthropy earlier in his commencement address. The Boston native, who hails from the suburb of Quincy, said his first business, Network Plus, lost a massive amount of money
