Stuart Broad's 20th career five-wicket haul paved the way for England to take up a dominant position in their one-off four-day Test against Ireland at Lord's.

The veteran seamer spear-headed the attack without his long-time partner James Anderson to typically lethal effect on Thursday, taking his five scalps in 17 overs, bowling five maidens and going for 51.

The visitors managed a below-par score of 172, with Fionn Hand falling in the 57th over, giving England around two hours to hammer away at their tally, ending the first day on 152 for one loss.

Under-fire Zak Crawley looked to take the opportunity presented to him by a modest attack, getting a half century under his belt that will surely hand him a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the first Ashes Test later in June.

But having passed 50, he was unable to make the most of the chance he was given, and fell not long after on 56, following a tremendous caught and bowled by Hand for the bowler's first Test wicket.
