England ended day one of the one-off Ireland Test comfortably on top, posting 152 for one in around two hours in response to the visitors' 172 total.

Stuart Broad starred for the hosts on his rare opportunity to lead the attack, taking his 20th Test five-for. 

Josh Tongue impressed on debut with ball in hand as he showcased his credentials as back-up to Mark Wood as a genuine pace option for England ahead of the Ashes, which get underway later this month. 

While both Ben Duckett (60 not out) and Zak Crawley (56) managed half centuries as England began their reply, the Kent batter perhaps left the middle disappointed he was not able to put together a more sizeable score.

The first morning of the Test Match summer and I came on the tube expecting to see the same advertising hoardings as usual on the escalators at St John’s Wood - none other than Charlie Sale’s book ‘The Covers Are Off’. 

Well blow me, he’s been replaced by the full array of MCC paraphernalia. I don’t know what Charlie would say about that. 

It’s a sad day when you don’t see the great man's name on the underground.

TECTOR WICKET WAS NO FLUKE 

I was thrilled with the dismissal of Harry Tector caught at fine leg-slip and the reaction from Stuart Broad was ‘wow’. But it was not a fluke.
