Lewis Hamilton and George Russell collided in a bizarre 210mph fright in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix – before Max Verstappen took pole.
The Mercedes men came into contact on the main straight at the end of Q2, with Hamilton’s front-wing endplate dislodged in the meeting.
‘George just backed off,’ exclaimed Hamilton, as Russell moved into his path unwittingly when passing Ferrari’s then slow-moving Carlos Sainz. ‘That’s really dangerous.’
Russell, enduring a terrible afternoon in the upgraded Mercedes, said: ‘You didn’t tell me there was a car behind. I don’t know what the hell is going on in this session. The car is bouncing all over the place.’
