Barca were defeated by Lyon in last year’s final but were heavy favourites against a Wolfsburg side who lost the German league title to Bayern Munich and only narrowly beat an injury-hit Arsenal team in the semi-finals.

But a Barca victory guaranteed their place in the group stage and the Catalans’ domination of possession finally paid dividends after half-time.
