It is fair to say that Stuart Broad is looking forward to seeing David Warner rather than vice-versa.

It is common knowledge how much the Ashes gets the best out of Broad. During the 2019 series, he dismissed Warner seven times in 10 innings, coming around the wicket to the left-hander with great effect. Warner managed just 35 runs off Broad across the series and scored just 95 runs in total.

So it came as little surprise that the first question put to the Australian opener here yesterday related to Broad’s recent comments about how much he was looking forward to bowling again at Warner.

‘Do I void that series?’ joked Warner, referring to Broad’s suggestion that the Covid series two years should be discounted.

‘I’ve not really thought about that yet. It’s the World Test Championship final first and Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur are on my mind. That’s what’s important to us now, then I’ll switch on and worry about Stuart Broad if they select him for the first Test.’

It is unlikely that Broad will not feature in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston on June 16. He is a man who thrives on such occasions and off the back of a five-wicket haul at Lord’s against Ireland, the 36-year-old looks ready as ever.

Warner, also 36, arrived in England off the back of an impressive personal campaign at the IPL where he captained Delhi Capitals under Ricky Ponting. 

There is a sense of sticking to the basics and carrying on from the IPL to do what he does best this summer: attack and look to score runs, rather than trying to see off the new ball.
