Golf fans have rushed to social media to poke fun at Rory McIlroy after the news broke that the PGA Tour has agreed to merge with LIV Golf after a long rivalry.
The two tours are set to unite and form a yet-to-be-named company, bringing an end to their drawn-out legal battle over player contracts.
While the PGA was accused of violating antitrust laws by banning LIV players from its tour, golf's preeminent circuit countersued its Saudi-backed rivals, accusing the outfit of interfering with its deals.
Players who defected to LIV Golf were banned at PGA events, but they can still play at the majors, provided they meet qualifying criteria.
Despite the draw of the big-money contracts McIlroy remained a steadfast critic of LIV, with fans therefore seeing the funny side after rejecting the advances of a huge payday, only to end up on the same tour as his colleagues nonetheless.
