Josh Griffin's moment of madness cost Hull dear as St Helens marched into the Challenge Cup semi-finals courtesy of a 32-18 win after a brutal match saw casualties on both sides.

The score was 12-12 as the half-time hooter sounded when Griffin approached referee Chris Kendall to complain about a penalty awarded to Saints moments earlier.

Kendall issued the second-rower with a yellow card for dissent and, when Griffin argued with the sinbinning, he was shown a red.

The loss of Griffin, who scored Hull’s opening try, was a huge blow for Tony Smith’s team in an injury-strewn clash.
