Manchester United turned in another sorry Old Trafford performance on Wednesday as they were thumped 3-0 by a second-string Newcastle side who ended their Carabao Cup defence with a whimper.

Erik ten Hag had also opted to ring the changes after their derby day humbling at the hands of Manchester City but any hopes of bouncing back were dispelled by the ruthless Magpies.

First-half goals from Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall sent Eddie Howe's side on their way before Joe Willock completed the drubbing with a wonderful third on the hour.

The home side and their manager, who was subjected to 'sacked in the morning chants' on at least two occasions, will grab most of the headlines. But Newcastle's much-changed roster produced a brilliant performance commensurate with the club's upward trajectory.

Here, Mail Sport takes you through who thrilled on the night and who had an evening to forget in Manchester.

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

Andre Onana 6

Might have closed the angle on Almiron sooner for the first goal but was largely blameless on the night.

Diogo Dalot 4

Hooked at half-time after a disappointing 45 minutes that saw both Newcastle goals come from down his side. Almiron caused the Portuguese defender all sorts of problems.

Victor Lindelof 5

No glaring mishaps but failed to deal with Gordon's movement on the front line.

Harry Maguire 6

Pretty anonymous for most of the game. Passed the ball well in possession but his header fell to Hall for the Magpies second.

Sergio Reguilon 6

Showed promise very early in the game with some smart link up with Garnacho but faded and was nowhere to be found for the opener as Livramento charged down United's left-flank.

Hannibal Mejbri 6

Lucky not to have been sent off in the first-half but was the only visible display of passion and aggression from the United team.

Casemiro 4.5

Poor return to the starting line-up after injury after he was booked, ran all over and then substituted at the break.

Antony 6

Performed well in flashes but decision-making let him down at crucial moments.

Mason Mount 5

Barely influenced the game in the attacking phases and could do nothing off the ball as the away side dominated the centre of the park.

Alejandro Garnacho 5

Started well but faded. Was another player who showed energy and a bit of spark but did nothing of note after the first 15 minutes.
