Newcastle Knights are in mourning following the death of club legend Leigh Maughan.

Maughan has been remembered as a 'founding father' of the NRL club after he died following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Along with Michael Hill and the late Gerry Edser, Maughan was crucial to the formation of the Knights and their inclusion in the NRL, having joined the NSW Rugby League in 1988.

Maughan was across all aspects of the game during his life. He was a player, referee and Knights board member, as well as a life member at the club.

In 2020, he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to rugby league.
