How Josh Kerr will be glad he came home now. All winter, the world champion at 1,500metres had agonised over whether to compete in the World Indoor Championships here in Glasgow, or skip it to fully focus on the Olympics in the summer.

It was only on the eve of Britain selecting its squad, and after a few arguments with his coach, that Kerr finally decided he could not miss a global event in his home country.

And boy, did the Scot’s choice pay off as he raised the roof by powering to victory in the 3,000m final to win his second global gold in six months.

Kerr burst clear on the final lap and never looked back, cupping his ear to the crowd as he finished in 7min 42.98sec, beating American Yared Nuguse by 0.61sec, with Ethiopian Selemon Barega back in third.

‘For Scotland and for the UK, this a huge championships and I didn’t want to short change anyone,’ Kerr said.

‘I am so relieved and so happy. It was a hard fought race, up and down as I expected, but if you come to Scotland, it’s on!’

It was not such a happy homecoming for Kerr’s Scottish compatriot Laura Muir, racing in the women’s 3,000m final a few minutes earlier, but who could not deliver the result she or the expectant home crowd so deeply craved.
