A ‘toxic environment’ and ‘culture of fear’ at swimming clubs in England has been laid bare in a damning report.

Abusive coaching practices, bullying and racism were all exposed in the independent review, which was commissioned by Swim England following complaints from several athletes, including Olympic medallists.

The governing body have said they are ‘sorry that the culture within aquatics has fallen short’. 

But Sport England have threatened to cut Swim England’s funding unless they address the ‘significant issues’.

‘Today’s publication represents a crossroads moment,’ said Sport England in a statement. ‘The report details abuse, racism, bullying, bad practice, negative experiences and a poor culture within the sport.
