PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan says golf's peace talks are 'accelerating', despite growing fears around the sport that they have in fact stalled.

In his first media appearance since August, and indeed the missed deadline of December 31 for the finalization of negotiations with the Saudi backers of LIV, Monahan refused to share any details that might permit a wider distribution of his optimism.

But he was adamant progress is being made in private and reiterated his Tour's desire for a deal at a time when that motivation has been called into question.

Speaking ahead of this week's Players Championship at Sawgrass, Monahan said: 'I know you're curious about the status of the negotiations with the PIF (Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund). I recently met with the governor of the PIF, and our negotiations are accelerating as we spend time together.

'While we have several key issues that we still need to work through, we have a shared vision to quiet the noise and unlock golf's worldwide potential. It's going to take time but I reiterate what I said at the tour championship in August: I see a positive
