Daniel Ricciardo's frustrations have continued after being defeated by teammate Yuki Tsunoda in qualifying at the Japanese Grand Prix.

The 34-year-old has not lost the sport's biggest smile despite his mystifying struggles in his RB at the season's opening grand prix in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and back home in Australia.

He has been consistently outdriven by his Japanese teammate Yuki Tsunoda and hasn't yet finished higher than 12th in the three races, prompting comparisons with his previous underwhelming spell at McLaren.

The Aussie was looking at a possible Q3 appearance, which would have been his first since the Mexican Grand Prix last year, but Tsunoda had other ideas and nudged himself into the top 10 at the end of Q2, causing Ricciardo's elimination with his deficit to Tsunoda just 0.055s.

Ricciardo's engineer Pierre Hamelin took to team radio afterwards to deliver the news to Australian in an odd fashion.

'Alright Daniel, I know you always need to do a little bit better, but you should be pleased. We're in a good place,' said Hamelin.

Ricciardo replied sternly: 'Yeah I'm obviously not, but I appreciate we've done well,'

Hamelin finished with: 'Yeah, let's focus on the positive.'
