sport news Controversial Aussie basketballer Liz Cambage is ejected for two shocking acts ... trends now Star is on $1million contract playing in China Comes after being banned from playing for Australia Aussies have slammed her latest brain explosion By Josh Alston For Daily Mail Australia Published: 05:43 BST, 15 April 2024 | Updated: 05:43 BST, 15 April 2024 Viewcomments Polarising Aussie basketball player Liz Cambage has courted controversy once again by getting ejected from a game in China for viciously elbowing one opponent in the head and hitting another in the face. The former WNBA player and Australian Opal found her career on the rocks after allegedly making racial remarks toward the Nigerian national team in a warm-up match before the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Opals teammates and members of the Nigerian team alleged Cambage called her opponents 'monkeys' and told them to 'go back to your third world country' during a break in play. That put her offside with her Los Angeles Sparks Nigerian-American teammates and she was ultimately released by the franchise. Her comments also divided the Opals camp and she has since been blacklisted from ever representing her country again. Liz Cambage ejected with two flagrant fouls in G2 of the WCBA Finals. That second one in particular was very bad. And then of course had to put on a show as she left. Her bumper pay day means Cambage earns more than four times as much as the best-paid WNBA stars, with Supermax contracts capped at $234,936 per-season. That money has done little to temper the centre's temper, though, after she was ejected on the weekend for a pair of ugly incidents. In the first, Cambage lashes out and hits an opponent on the side of the head from behind while on defence. Lucky to still be on the court, she then threw an ugly elbow into the head of an opponent while on offence. That led to her ejection from the match, but Cambage was far from done. After refusing to leave the court while trying to get officials to review the incident on video, she stormed up to an official in a menacing way and screamed in his face, before mocking the crowd and delivering a curtsy. Cambage (pictured second from left) was eventually banned from representing the Opals again after her long list of indiscretions Cambage (left) did not endear herself to her Nigerian teammates in the WNBA, where she was released by the Los Angeles Sparks team Basketball fans were quick to savage the Aussie star for her actions, calling her a 'clown' and saying 'a leopard doesn't change its spots'. With the Opals gearing up for a tough campaign at the Paris Olympics, several online commenters said they were glad Cambage would not be part of the tournament. 'I’m a proud Aussie but Liz is an embarrassment not just to most Australian’s but to all those ‘fair’ minded players & spectators around the world who follow sport,' one follower posted. 'Liz has a few issues to work through,' posted another. 'Such a waste of talent. Could’ve gone down as one of the all time greats if she wasn’t such a magnet for drama. So glad they booted her from the Opals. Her behaviour is just downright embarrassing,' added another. Cambage’s side lost the match 96-85 as Inner Mongolia levelled the series 1-1.
