Adam Peaty will lead Great Britain’s swimmers at the Paris Olympics as he bids to join Michael Phelps as only the second male athlete in history to win gold in the same event in three Games.

Peaty, who stepped away from the sport a year ago due to fatigue and concerns over his mental health, will defend his Olympic title in the 100m breaststroke as one of a 33-strong Team GB swimming team this summer.

‘From breaking my foot to burning myself out completely, it was incredibly tough to come out of that and I nearly didn’t, I nearly didn’t come out of that,’ Peaty told the BBC yesterday. ‘I was ready to walk away from the sport.’

Peaty secured his place in Paris with victory two weeks
