AFL great Matthew Lloyd has been exposed for telling tall tales about a close encounter with a lioness when he was on a safari in South Africa.

The Essendon legend, 46, has long dined out on his interaction - but it turns out the former gun full forward stretched the truth.

Veteran AFL journalist Damien Barrett set the scene, with Lloyd left red-faced on Channel Nine's Sunday Footy Show.

'Two weeks ago on this show, Nathan Brown told us an extraordinary story of a scuffle with a quokka. And then last week, the man who sits to his right [Lloyd] wanted to one-up him and told an even more extraordinary story,' Barrett told viewers.

Lloyd began: 'We took the best 30 boys in the country to South Africa and there were some lion cubs with the mother lion.
