Time is a rare luxury afforded to managers in the current football climate.

Time to build a squad, time to get results and time to make and learn from mistakes. Football owners that invest considerable money want results quickly and that is why Liam Rosenior finds himself out of job.

The decision to sack Rosenior was met with widespread shock, but a number of Hull City fans had feared this may happen if the club failed to make the play-offs.

After years of frustration and apathy under the previous ownership, all Hull supporters wanted was a manager and team that worked and played for the badge. Success was secondary. That is not how owners think, of course. But for the first time in a long time, the club felt stable under Rosenior. There was an unwavering connection between him and the fanbase. It now feels as though that progress has been ripped up and the club is back to square one.

Acun Ilicali, the club’s owner, has not been shy about his ambitions of reaching the Premier League as quickly as possible.

When the 39-year-old took over in November 2022, he inherited a team that was two places above the relegation zone and had the worst defensive record in the league. Rosenior steadied the ship and Hull went on to finish a respectable 15th.

Few pundits predicted the Tigers to challenge for the play-offs this season. That they finished one place and three points outside the top six was viewed as progress by many. It was the club’s highest Championship finish since they were relegated from the top flight in 2017.

There are others who think the club should have finished higher and that is clearly the view held by the owners. Rosenior was backed in the summer and winter transfer windows. Liam Delap and Tyler Morton
