There isn’t much obvious crossover between the great golfing turncoat Jon Rahm and the great Chelsea sage, Todd Boehly, but there is some. It’s well hidden, but this week nudged it into the light.

Let’s start with Rahm and something he tried to feed a few of us on Tuesday. That was in Louisville, at the US PGA Championship, which between a divorce and an arrest squeezed in the usual fretting around those who took the loot and those who did not. Rahm trousered the cash, of course, and went to LIV in one of the bigger storms to find that tee cup.

Anyway, he was asked a question about crossing to the ‘other side’ and that’s when he attempted to pull a bit of a fast one. ‘You guys keep saying “the other side” but I'm still a PGA Tour member, whether I’m suspended or not,’ Rahm said. ‘I don't feel like I'm on the other side, I'm just not playing there.’

Well, that didn’t quite pass go – a former PGA Tour player, Aaron Oberholser, said he wanted to reach into his TV and wring Rahm’s neck.

You see, most people can smell the difference between a chocolate brownie and what we might find in a farmer’s field. Good on him for trying, though, and we might offer the same trier’s medal to Boehly who a day later attempted a similar trick.

That was when he spoke at the Qatar Economic Forum, because he has been doing the rounds lately. We might call them Todd Talks, because he likes that vibe – the little mic clipped to his cheek, open-collar shirt, casual billionaire cool from a man with a cool and casual regard for our collective memory.

This bit stood out: ‘The number one thing is you have got to be patient. You are putting something together and expecting it come together really quickly, but the reality is anything really good takes a little bit time. Patience was always a thought for us.’

He then doubled down on his theme. ‘You have to have the resolve to not hear all the noise around you and remain committed to the plan. And since Boxing Day, we are the fourth best team in the Premier League. When you look at what is going on now, it feels better and better.’

You might wonder what Graham Potter thinks of the brownie being served up there - he was sacked seven months into a five-year contract. But that’s ancient history. More relevant now are the thoughts of Mauricio Pochettino. You’d assume he knows what not to swallow from the master’s plate.

Because here’s the thing with Boehly – he is having a little victory lap and it really is the most amusing and transparent of delusions. Like his approach to spending on players, he just wants to throw a few words out there in the hope some of them work. Like Rahm he wants to pull a fast one.
