The strangest week of Scottie Scheffler's career culminated with a day that provoked thoughts of what might have been.

While nothing in his placid existence is ever likely to match the sight of him being led away in handcuffs, it was none the less surreal to see him climb so close to the top of the leaderboard here on Sunday night.

By the time he wrapped up his final round at the US PGA Championship, recording a brilliant 65 for a 13 under par tally, he was sitting in the top 10. 

That score was never going to be enough to catch the frontrunners but it was sufficient to ponder the damage caused by Saturday's third-round 73, when he returned his first over-par card in 266 days.

Such a blip was entirely understandable, of course, and very much a delayed reaction to his arrest, but to see him in full flight on the final lap was to be reminded how close he was to pulling off his second jail break in the space of three days.

In light of that saga, Scheffler can reflect on the kind of recovery that would be beyond almost anyone else in the game. His next mission to extract himself from those four police charges which will forever link the green jackets of a two-time Masters champion to the orange jail scrubs of a non-compliant motorist.

To go by the whispers of Valhalla Golf Club, the suspicion is the matter will be dropped before Tuesday's arraignment, where those charges will be heard. 

Presumably the same chatter has reached him because the Scheffler of Sunday was far more familiar than the one we saw hacking to all boundaries of the course on Saturday.
