Brad Arthur has every reason to be emotional after being sacked as Parramatta coach the day before his 50th birthday - but it was a question about his life away from footy that made him break down.

The Eels coach opened up after he was sacked by the club after 10-and-a-half seasons in charge and admitted he was initially 'disappointed' with the decision to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

Arthur held himself in check and appeared proud as he revealed how his players had supported him since the news broke, but a question about his wife drew a very different reaction as he was interviewed by Channel Seven.

He could only say her name 'Michelle' before almost breaking down and needing a few moments to compose himself.

'Sorry. Michell has put her whole life on hold for me, so... and the kids,' he said as his voice broke with emotion.

Despite the Eels keeping him in the dark about his axing for almost three weeks after making the decision at a May 1 board meeting, he insists he bears no ill will towards the club.

'When I got the phone call to come in, I rang my manager straight away. I knew probably what was coming and I was disappointed because it's all I know,' he said.

'I love the club, I love the players, I love my job.
