sport news Ronald Koeman calls for Everton reaction against Atalanta

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has urged his players to provide a reaction to consecutive Premier League defeats by making the perfect start to the Europa League proper against Atalanta.

The Blues began the season brightly with victory over Stoke and a very creditable draw at Manchester City in between qualifying for the group stages with aggregate wins over Ruzomberok and Hajduk Split.

But defeats by Chelsea and Tottenham have brought into question the club's failure to land a replacement for Romelu Lukaku, and Koeman is determined to get back on track at the Mapei Stadium. 

Koeman said: 'We have the same players available from last week. James McCarthy is maybe available for next week. 

'I take this competition seriously which we have shown already. It will be no different tomorrow. Like always we will start with a strong team and after last weekend we need to react.

'From my experience, it is not about the name of the Italian team. They are all difficult to beat and I have a lot of respect for Atalanta and what they achieved last season. It will be a difficult game. Rooney has travelled and he is part of the squad for tomorrow.
