Spotify is telling users who try to bypass ads to hit the road. 

The streaming platform is updating its terms of service, effective March 1st, to explicitly ban accounts that user ad blockers. 

A growing number of users were getting around advertisements by using ad blockers or downloading modded versions of the Spotify app.

Spotify offers two versions of its service - free and premium. 

When a user subscribes to Spotify Premium, they pay $9.99 per month and have unlimited access to Spotify's library of music without any ads. 

Free users can listen on-demand to 15 popular Spotify playlists that are curated to a user's tastes, but they also have to hear intermittent advertisements. 

Some users tried to skip the ads by installing ad blockers and now Spotify is bringing the hammer down on those accounts.  

'We've updated our user guidelines, making it clear that all types of ad blockers, bots, and fraudulent streaming activities are not permitted,' Spotify said in an email sent to users. 

On its website, Spotify states that 'circumventing or blocking advertisements in the Spotify Service, or creating or distributing tools designed to block advertisements in the Spotify Service' is not permitted.
