'Super Snow Moon' wows stargazers around the world

Stargazers across the world were treated to a stunning second showing of the 'Super Snow Moon' on Tuesday night.

The name refers to the fact that its appearance often coincides with with heavy snowfall around this time of year, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac reference book.

The lunar marvel was expected to be the largest and brightest full moon of 2019 due to the almost exact overlap of the moon's perigee - its closest point to Earth - and when it is at its fullest in the 28-day lunar cycle.

The point of true perigee is when the moon perfectly coincides with the fullest version of the moon, meaning it appears up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than normal.

After setting on Tuesday morning from its debut Monday night, the Super Snow Moon became visible again overnight.

Each month, the full moon carries a different name signifying what is most associated with that time. This is because centuries ago, lunar months were associated with the changing seasons rather than the solar year. Here, the moon in the sky above Rhode island

The super snow moon is the second of three supermoon events in the first three months of the year, which coincidentally marks the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, the mission that the first man walked on the moon.

'The February 2019 supermoon is special because it will be the largest full moon gracing our night skies until 2026,' said Emily Drabek-Maunder, astronomer at Royal Observatory Greenwich.

'This is because the moment the Moon is at its fullest phase is closer to the time the Moon is at perigee. Tonight, the Moon may seem brighter and will be up to 14 per cent larger than when the Moon is at apogee, or furthest away from Earth in its orbit.

In the UK, the supermoon began its rise in the east around sunset at 5.22pm GMT, before reaching its highest point towards the south around midnight, and then making its descent in the west around sunrise at 7.05am GMT.

The supermoon rose first in the US at 5.33pm Eastern in Providence, Rhode Island, followed by 5.46pm Eastern in New York, 5.43pm Central in Lutsen, Minnesota, 5.46pm Pacific in Las Vegas, 6.02pm Pacific in Los Angeles, and last at 7.50pm Hawaiian-Aleutian in Amatignak Island, Alaska.

In Australia, it rose at 7.39pm in Sydney (local time), 6.21pm in Brisbane, 8.11pm in Melbourne, 8.03pm in Adelaide, 8.12pm in Hobart, 7.04pm in Darwin and 7.02pm in Perth.

It's the second of three supermoons to light up the skies this year, following the Super Blood Wolf Moon that took place on January 21 and preceding yet another on March 21.
