BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) will be the latest in a string of legacy messaging apps to go the way of the dinosaur, according to a blog post from the app's overseers, Emtek.  

'The technology industry... is very fluid, and in spite of our substantial efforts, users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on,' reads the blog post.  

'Though we are sad to say goodbye, the time has come to sunset the BBM consumer service, and for us to move on.'

On May 31, BBM will shut down for good, or at least for those looking to use the app commercially. 

An enterprise version of BBM, called BBMe, which is encrypted and geared towards professionals, will remain active. 

Though some users may be saddened by the announcement, many more are likely asking themselves how the app was even still in operation.

About a decade ago, BBM was among the most popular mobile messaging apps on the market, having launched in 2006 a full three years before similar 'mobile-first' platforms like WhatsApp. 

Unlike today's messaging apps, however, BBM was confined to use by Blackberry's phones and as the devices fell out of favor, ceding control to Apple and Android phones, so too did BBM. Aside from one area of the world, that is.
