A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled New Jersey and New York City on Friday, adding itself to the long list of earthquakes to hit the east coast of the US.

The earthquake occurred at about 10:23 a.m. ET roughly four miles northeast of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey.

This is the first time that a major earthquake hit the East Coast since 2011 when a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck just outside Washington, DC - tremors were felt from North Carolina up to Maine.
