Pride of lions take down a baby giraffe on Kenya's Maasai Mara

This is the heartbreaking moment a pride of lions kill a newborn baby calf by outwitting its mother.

The lions were photographed as they surrounded the pair on the savanna, and jumped on the mother to chase her off, separating her from her young calf. 

The incident took place in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya earlier this week.

Photographs show the protective parent trying to fend off the female and young male predators by kicking after them, and shielding the calf with her legs.

But despite her defence, the mother is distracted when a lioness leaps onto her back and the pride is able to easily take down the calf, which is thought to have been born a few days ago.

The action-packed attack and tragic end was captured by local guide James Nampaso, from the nearby Kicheche Bush Camp.
