Elderly residents who have battled for six years to fix tree hazard

Dozens of elderly residents are outraged as a tree on the council strip outside their block of units and villas has caused them to feel trapped in their homes.

The Blue Gum tree, on Essex street, in Killara on Sydney's upper north shore, has lifted the road, the footpath, service box and the private driveway belonging to the block of units.

Residents have damaged their cars coming in and out of the property, and services such as Meals on Wheels refuse to visit the block.

One couple was forced to move out of the block of units, as the services they required couldn't access them due to the steepness of the driveway, 9News reported.

Another man also risked his life when he needed an ambulance, staggering out the front of the building and onto the highway so they wouldn't have to deal with the driveway.

The residents have raised concerns with Ku-ring-gai Council for six years, as the tree is on council land.

All the council is willing to do is pay just half the cost of shaving the driveway down.
