A toddler has been dumped outside a supermarket after an alleged car thief picked up more than he bargained for.

Police were notified a grey Holden commodore had been stolen with a 2-year-old Perth boy, Ryan, sitting in the back of the vehicle at around midday on Saturday.

An 'extremely emotional' caller notified officers minutes after the car was taken at Forrestfield, 15 kilometres south-west of Perth.

A neighbour took off after the commodore to try and track down the alleged thief but they were unsuccessful. 

The young boy, who appeared to be okay, was pushed out of the car at a Foodworks about ten minutes after he was taken. 

Police continued to search for the stolen commodore which they sighted at 12.20pm with a lost tire. The alleged thief fled on foot.
