A tradesman was left with brain damage after being brutally knocked out in a corporate boxing match.

Joel Rea was concussed only eight seconds into his first ever match in an amateur event at ABA Stadium in Auckland on August 25, the NZ Herald reported.

The 36-year-old was knocked completely unconscious and hospitalised for several days to undergo a series of scans to check for bleeding on the brain. 

His wife Olivia spoke of her fear when she saw her husband drop to the floor.

'Oh my god, did I just lose my husband? Is he going to die in my arms in the ring?' she said.

She also voiced her concern that her husband hadn't been adequately prepared for the fight.

'I was quite nervous, I was worried about the little amount of time he had before getting into the ring, and the fact he had no headgear on.'
