As they await 'miracle' baby number four, rugby league legend Johnathan Thurston has revealed his wife Samantha told him to leave her due to her pregnancy struggle.

The 35-year-old announced the surprise pregnancy on Instagram this week, but revealed it hasn't always been smooth sailing.

'She offered to leave me after our third attempt at IVF failed. I just told her I loved her and I would never leave her, even if I would never be a Dad,' Thurston told the Daily Telegraph.

'My heart broke for her,' Thurston said.

Thurston played his last game for the North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday night leaving behind a legacy much larger than the game itself.

In 2011, with Thurston then aged 29 and Samantha, 36, the couple decided they wanted to have children.

The couple were living in a unit and the North Queensland Cowboys star, well on his way to becoming one of the greats, was travelling frequently both during the on and off season.
