Father Rod Bower and his road-side signs have become infamous for their progressive take on religious messages.

But the Australian priest has come face-to-face with hostility and it is all down to his liberal view on climate change, asylum seekers, Islam, the treatment of indigenous Australians as well as gay rights. 

In his new tell-all book Outspoken, the clergyman comes clean about what lead to his open-minded lookout on religion.

In 2013, Father Bower has used the message board outside St Mary's Church in Gosford to share 'Dear Christians. Some PPL are gay. Get over it. Love God.'

Since then, he has been regularly terrorised, sent death threats and called a traitor of Christian values.

But he hasn't stopped him using the 50 characters to get his point of view across and it all spawns from a harrowing past.
