In the second case of animal cruelty in as many days, a family dog has been attacked in its own backyard by intruders and left with horror injuries.

The dog was found with several gashes on its body after a brazen attack by a number of people in the yard of a Northern Territory home on Sunday evening.

Police said the trespassers gained entrance to the yard of a house in Tennant Creek and attacked the pup with an edged weapon, slashing it several times causing lacerations to its body.

In a similar attack yesterday, a Maltese cross Jack Russell was stabbed and left for dead in its owners' backyard by intruders
