A promising young footballer has handed himself into police after allegedly attempting to assault a woman in Melbourne's CBD on Sunday.

Jackson Williams, 19, appeared in court on Wednesday over the incident in which a 39-year-old woman was grabbed by an attacker on Little Lonsdale Street who then attempted to drag her into Brights Place at about 6.30am.

The woman was able to fight the man off and police released CCTV footage of the alleged suspect.
