A quick-thinking nurse is lucky to be alive after miraculously surviving a late-night hit-and-run.

Jesse Fraser, 30, was on her way home from a night shift at Northern Hospital in Melbourne's northern suburb of Epping when her car was struck by a Subaru with its headlights off.

While many would panic under pressure, Ms Fraser kept her cool and managed to call emergency services while trapped in her car.

Locals rushed to help the young woman when they heard the crash, which happened in a residential street just before midnight, Nine News reported.

But as one bystander said, Ms Fraser had helped herself, calling Triple-Zero from the confines of her wrecked Honda CR-V four-wheel-drive.
