None of our five blind taste-testers were fooled by the Quorn version of the classic sausage roll, but most of them enjoyed it regardless.
The main differences were the saltiness of the 'meat', the glaze and colour on the pastry, and the dryness.
Siofra Brennan: I was actually really impressed. If I'd had it on its own without the meat one to compare it to, I could have believed it was real meat.
It had a good savoury flavour and a firm texture, it was more the vegan pastry that let it down as it was quite dry.
Once I ate the real thing, I could tell it was the non-vegan one as it more was moist with flaky pastry. But I've never had a Gregg's sausage roll before, so I could easily have been fooled!
Vegan sausage roll rating: 4/5
Unity Blott: The filling on the vegan pastry was dry, lacking in flavour and hard to chew. More seasoning would have helped. The pastry was also brittle and not as flaky as I would have liked.
The pork version had much more texture, the inside was moister and pastry had a nice buttery sheen to it.
