Police shame driver by releasing footage of him coasting in the middle lane of the M6 for THREE MILES Officers posted footage online of the vehicle on the M6 Toll, in Cannock, Staffs The clip even shows the car move into the right hand lane after being overtaken Social media users were quick to criticise the poor standard of driving Hogging the middle lane has been punishable as careless driving since 2013By Joe Middleton For Mailonline Published: 16:20 GMT, 12 February 2019 | Updated: 16:25 GMT, 12 February 2019 Viewcomments A driver caught hogging the middle lane of a motorway for three miles has been lambasted on social media. Officers posted footage of the car on Twitter after following it on the M6 Toll in Cannock, Staffordshire at 11.35pm on Sunday, when there was no other traffic in the left hand lane. The footage shows the car even move into the right hand lane after being flashed and overtaken by a Mercedes. The Mercedes flashes its lights at the middle lane hogger on the M6 to let the motorist know about the improper usage of the middle lane The Mercedes passes the vehicle and then moves over into the left hand lane of the motorway Bizarrely the driver then indicates and decides to move into the far right hand lane Social media users were quick to criticise the motorist for his driving. One person on Twitter said: 'Yes this is a drivers pet hate. I'll be driving on the M1 for a couple of hours on Wednesday night and I can't wait to have to negotiate idiots like this among other things. Motorway driving has become incredibly frustrating!' Another person said: 'This is so common at night that it's not funny anymore......' Central Motorway Police Group, which covers Staffordshire and West Midlands, wrote that middle lane hogging is 'drivers' biggest pet hate'. The police added: 'The driver had been driving for just over a year and had even had extra tuition on motorway driving. 'It's clear he didn't pay attention. Driver reported for driving without due care and attention. 'He said he panicked, more likely it was to show the Mercedes driver, who flashed him and clearly tried to give lane advice after overtaking him, that he had no intention of using lane one.' The motorist may be invited to attend a retraining course as an alternative to penalty points and a fine. Middle-lane hogging has been punishable as careless driving since 2013 when then road safety minister Stephen Hammond introduced a law to give police powers to issue fixed penalty notices for what the Department for Transport deemed 'less serious driving offences'. These include persistently cruising along in lane two of a motorway when lane one is free, tailgating, undertaking and driving too slowly on major routes, all of which can be penalised with up to three points and a £100 fine. No figures are believed to be kept for the number of drivers caught for middle lane hogging. A poll of 2,000 UK drivers commissioned by carmaker Hyundai last year found someone staying in the middle lane of a motorway is the 10th most common reason motorists swear when they are behind the wheel.
