An elderly woman who was covered in mosquito bites due to an infestation of the insects at a local golf club has contracted the serious Ross River virus as an outbreak of the normally tropical disease spreads as far south as the Gold Coast.
The woman, 76, was diagnosed with the virus earlier this month, after being bitten many times by mosquitoes that had bred in the water on the liquidated Helensvale Gold Club.
Ross River virus is normally only found in tropical areas, and causes serious inflammation, rashes and fever that can last for weeks.
