A post-mortem examination held on Tuesday gave the cause of death as an incised wound to the neck, police said.

The Metropolitan Police said on Wednesday evening a 24-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to a south London police station.

Detective Inspector Domenica Catino, who is leading the investigation, said: 'Although we have made an arrest, we still need to hear from anyone that may have been in the area on Sunday morning.

'Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could really help our investigation.

'We are aware of speculation around the motive for this attack and can now confirm that the suspect approached Mr Anderson in an off-licence shop before an altercation broke out and the suspect delivered a fatal attack.

'Our top priorities now are to support Mr Anderson's family.'

Friends said Mr Anderson was popular in the area and was known as a family man who doted on his daughter. He is believed to have been returning home from a party when he was killed

Mr Anderson is said to have been returning home from a friend's party when he was asked for a cigarette in a convenience store.

Witnesses said an argument ensued in which he was attacked and killed.

Friend Luke Roche, 29, told The Evening Standard: 'He loved his daughter. He was a family man and very popular, no one had a bad word to say about him. I honestly can't think of anyone he'd had a fight with. He just wasn't part of that life.'

The assistant manager of the store, Muhammad Khan, said a fight broke out over a cigarette which ended with the customer being stabbed to death just 20 seconds later.

He said: 'They had an argument about cigarettes. My cousin was here, he was manager. The guy who had the knife came in about five or six minutes after the man who then got stabbed.

'The guy with the knife asked the other for free cigarettes, like as a favour or something.
