Twitter users have slammed the Home Office for an 'appalling' Valentine's Day tweet about prosecuting couples in sham marriages.

The tweet reads: '#Rosesareredvioletsareblue, if your marriage is a sham we'll be on to you' #happyvalentinesday'.

It was posted by the Governement department in 2013 but has resurfaced five years later after bosses refused to take it down.

Theresa May was Home Secretary at the time, under former Prime Minister David Cameron.
