 A young man who severed his uncle's hand with a machete after an evening watching TV has been jailed for at least three-and-a-half years in Melbourne.

Timothy Attwell, 20, was at home at Frankston North with his girlfriend on March 23 last year, when the young lovers started a row.

Attwell's uncle tried to intervene in the spat.
