This is the sickening moment a homeless thug killed a man with just one punch.

CCTV footage released by police with blessing of the victim's family shows Marc Bennison, 37, launch a cowardly attack on Christopher Shipway in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, on August 25 last year.

Bennison can then be seen standing over Mr Shipway as he lay dying in the street.

Mr Shipway died in Hull Royal Infirmary six days later on September 1 - just days before his 47th birthday.

Bennison, who claimed he was defending himself, was jailed for four years today  after he was found guilty of manslaughter following a four-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

Mr Shipway's devastated family said they hoped releasing the video would make people understand just how dangerous just one punch can be.

He had suffered lifelong brain injuries after being starved of oxygen at birth and worked with the charity Headway, the brain injury association.

Mr Shipway was also involved in two road accidents at the ages of five and 12, suffering serious injuries, including a fractured skull in one and broken legs in the other, leaving him with a limp.

In a joint statement following the verdict, Mr Shipway's relatives said: 'We are devastated to have lost Christopher in such unnecessary circumstances.'

Relatives said they were 'very proud' of Mr Shipway's work for a head injury charity, and added that it was a 'tragic coincidence' how his death came about.

'It is a tragic coincidence that it was a traumatic brain injury that took him from us. It was a wholly unnecessary and completely avoidable death,' it read.

Marc Bennison had asked the victim for cash minutes earlier and allegedly lost his temper and lashed out because he 'had a bellyful' of the other man's hostile attitude towards him, a court heard.

Before the fatal punch, Mr Shipway told Mr Bennison he did not have to live on the street because there is 'help available'.

The judge said there were 'other options' available to Bennison that night.

'We are confident that the one thing Christopher would want to come out of this, as we do, is that people realise how dangerous it can be to punch someone even just once. A fist can be, and has been in this instance, a lethal weapon,' the statement continued.

It added that if hearing about the case 'can make someone think twice' about using vioelnce then the family 'will feel as though maybe some good can come out of an awful situation.'

'That one fatal blow, just one punch, has taken the life of a much loved son, brother, husband, nephew, grandson, cousin, friend and valued member of the community. So many lives have been devastated from one punch,' it went on.

The statement also touched on how Mr Shipway was also left injured on the street as people walked past.
