A mother-of-four who left a cyclist brain damaged when she fell asleep at the wheel of her uninsured Nissan Micra after a 3am cocaine binge has been jailed for three years.

Kelly Sumner, 35, mowed down cyclist Stephen Derbyshire as she drove home through Horwich, Mancester, the day after a 3am party where she snorted up to six bags of cocaine.

Patricia Derbyshire, Stephen's wife, blasted Sumner for 'ruining' their lives after the single mother ploughed into her husband while 16 times the drug drive limit.

She said her husband Stephen had been so badly injured in the crash caused by 35-year-old cleaner Kelly Sumner he had since considered taking his own life and repeatedly told her he was longer the man she married.

Sumner had been snorting cocaine at a 3am house party before apparently falling asleep at the wheel of her uninsured Nissan Micra as she drove home to Chorley, Lancashire, at 1pm.

The vehicle overtook a row of parked cars but then veered onto the wrong side of the road before ploughing head on into into 57-year old grandfather Mr Derbyshire who was out riding his bike with his nephew.

The victim, a respected senior manager at a global IT company, suffered severe head injuries and multiple fractures to his back, ribs and legs in the impact and spent five months in hospital after being left in a coma.

His head injuries were so severe he now requires 24-hour care from his family due to bouts of memory loss and disorientation and it is feared he will never work again.

Sumner, of Chorley, Lancs,  drank vodka and cider and snorted up to six bags of cocaine during the party. She stayed over after it ended at 3am and was driving home the next afternoon when the collision occurred.

At Bolton Crown Court a heartbreaking statement was read out on behalf of Mrs Derbyshire as Sumner was jailed for three years after she admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

She said: 'Our lives changed forever because of a reckless act. It was this woman's choice to take drugs and get behind the wheel - but my husband did not have a choice.

'There is nothing that Stephen loves more than being at home with his family but this has been taken from him so cruelly. We feel as though we have been taken away from him. He has repeatedly said that he is not the man that I married. We are at a time in our lives where we should be making plans for the future, now everything hangs in the balance.

'He is respected not just by colleagues in London but all over the world but now it is uncertain whether he will ever work at all. It feels so unfair given how hard he has worked all his life. I miss my life before and miss the way that my husband was immensely - but nobody misses his life more than Stephen does.'

The incident occurred on June 10 last year whilst Mr Derbyshire was cycling in Horwich. Sumner's car was seen by another driver to career diagonally across the road and hit Mr Derbyshire without taking any evasive action.

The victim was thrown 12 feet into the air before hitting a lamppost. He was tended at the roadside by a retired nurse, an off-duty firefighter, a midwife and an off-duty surgeon before being flown by helicopter to Preston Royal Infirmary where he underwent emergency surgery to save his life.

A drugs test later revealed that she had 'more than the specified level on benzoylecgonine' in her system - benzoylecgonine being a substance which indicates cocaine use.
