Brian Henry, 56, hurled fruit and racial abuse at his former lover

A drunk man who threw grapes at his ex-girlfriend moments before she collapsed and died was jailed for more than two years.

Brian Henry, 56, hurled fruit and racial abuse at his former lover after their dog bit him on the hand as he was pointing at her.

Henry, claiming his former lover had stabbed him, said he was going to get her arrested during the bitter argument on August 15, 2017. 

Police were called to their home in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, and Henry was arrested. 

While officers spoke to the victim - who was later found to have an undiagnosed heart problem - she collapsed and died outside the property.

Henry admitted two counts of racially/religiously aggravated common assault/beating at St Albans Crown Court.

He also pleaded guilty to engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour in an intimate/family relationship since December 2015.

The fourth matter, engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour in an intimate/family relationship, to which Henry pleaded not guilty, was put on file.
