Mystery surrounds how strongman home invader was killed as post-mortem results ...

A post-mortem examination conducted on an intruder who died following a struggle with a Sydney homeowner has proven to be 'inconclusive' and further tests will be carried out.

Harrington Park resident Johan Francois Schwartz, 44, was woken on Sunday morning by his dogs barking and 'challenged a male intruder located in the lounge room', detectives say.

The intruder, 35-year-old personal trainer and weightlifter Bradley Soper, collapsed and became unconscious following a struggle and couldn't be revived by paramedics.

A police source on Thursday said the post-mortem examination was inconclusive.

A toxicology report also hadn't helped investigators determine exactly what happened in the moments before Mr Soper's death, AAP understands.

Additional forensic analysis is now expected to be carried out.

News Corp Australia has reported Mr Soper had been a user of cocaine and steroids.

Detectives are trying to find out if Mr Soper and Mr Schwartz visited the same Fitness First on Bond Street in the CBD, The Daily Telegraph reported.

'One of the lines of inquiry we're looking into is if the two men are known to each other,' a police source said.

One trainer said he was certain the pair would've known 'each other by sight'.

Mr Soper had worked at numerous gyms across the CBD over the past three years.
